Friday, 5 July, EVIAN (France): Despite all the challenges drivers face on the daunting 2.08km Lac Leman circuit, the ever-present ever-changing variable water and weather conditions and the infamous rollers from the wake of ferry traffic that are hard to pick out, only a handful [of drivers] have been caught out; Alex Carella and Filip Roms crashing out of the race last year, Grant Trask the year before. Shaun Torrente was caught out in qualifying in 2017, Ahmed Al Hameli’s qualifying exit in 2015 arguably the most spectacular!
Surprisingly, given the unpredictable conditions, with the exception of the first Grand Prix in Evian in 2015 when pole-sitter Philippe Chiappe retired from the lead, the last three races have been won from pole, Carella in 2016 and 2017, Erik Stark last year.
The most successful driver over the last four years in Evian in terms of pole and race wins is Carella with two, in terms of podiums Torrente with three, in terms of points Torrente edges his adversary 45 to 40.
Filip Roms picked up his first championship podium with third in 2015, going one better the following year, Jonas Andersson, Sami Selio and Thani Al Qemzi with one apiece.
